Chimney & dryer vent FAQs
How often should I have my chimney swept?
Most wood-burning chimneys need sweeping once a year, and always when creosote reaches about one-eighth of an inch of buildup. Heavy use may call for more than once a season. Gas fireplaces still need an annual inspection.
How often does a chimney need to be inspected?
At least once a year for any chimney in use, per NFPA and CSIA guidance. Get a Level 2 inspection when buying or selling a home, after a chimney fire, or when changing appliances or fuel.
What are the signs I need a chimney sweep?
A smoky smell when the fireplace is cold, black tar-like buildup in the flue, poor draft or smoke spilling into the room, or animals and nesting sounds in the chimney.
How much does a chimney sweep cost?
We charge an up-front flat rate confirmed before we start. The exact price depends on your chimney and appliance — see our pricing page for current starting rates.
Is a chimney sweep messy?
It should not be. We use drop cloths, shoe covers, and a HEPA vacuum so soot stays contained. Most customers cannot tell we were there once we pack up.
What are the levels of chimney inspection?
Level 1 is the standard annual check. Level 2 adds a video flue scan and is required for home sales, after a chimney fire, or when changing appliances. Level 3 is a rare investigation of serious hazards.
Why does my chimney need relining?
A liner that is cracked, corroded, or the wrong size can no longer contain heat and gases safely. Relining is common after a chimney fire or when installing a new insert or converting to gas.
What causes a leaking chimney?
Usually a cracked crown, failed flashing, missing cap, or porous brick letting water in. We find the actual source and seal it rather than guessing.
Do gas fireplaces need servicing?
Yes. They collect soot and dust, vents can clog or corrode, and poor combustion can produce carbon monoxide. An annual tune-up keeps a gas fireplace safe and reliable.
How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?
About once a year for most homes, more often for large households or long vent runs. Clogged vents are a leading cause of home dryer fires and make the dryer work harder.
