The Three Stages of Creosote and Why Stage Three Changes Everything
Creosote is not one substance. It arrives in three recognisable forms, each harder to remove than the last, and which one is coating your flue determines whether a sweep is a routine hour of work or the start of a much larger conversation. The progression is driven almost entirely by how you burn.

Stage one: light, flaky soot
The short answer: dusty and easily brushed away. This is what a well-run fireplace produces — a thin, sooty layer with the texture of powder or light flakes. It comes off with a brush in a single pass and poses little risk while it stays at this stage. A flue that shows only stage one buildup after a full season tells you the system is drafting well and the wood was dry. This is the target condition, and annual sweeping is what keeps a chimney there.
Stage two: hard, shiny flakes
The short answer: tar-like deposits that need mechanical work. Stage two looks like small black flakes with a slightly glossy surface, often packed into the mortar joints and the smoke chamber. It forms when combustion runs cooler and unburned particles condense on the flue wall. A brush alone will not shift it; rotary tools with chains or specialised heads are typically required. Stage two is a signal to look at burning practice, because it means smoke is cooling too much before it exits.
Stage three: glazed creosote
The short answer: a hardened tar coating, and the one that causes chimney fires. Stage three appears as a shiny, sometimes rippled black glaze fused to the flue wall, looking almost like poured tar. It is highly concentrated fuel sitting inside your chimney. Once ignited, it burns extremely hot and can crack a clay liner or reach framing. Removing it requires chemical treatment to break down the glaze followed by aggressive mechanical work, and in some cases the deposits cannot be fully removed at all — at which point relining becomes the honest recommendation rather than an upsell.
What pushes a flue from stage one to stage three
The short answer: wet wood, starved air and an oversized or cold flue. Unseasoned wood spends the fire boiling off its own moisture instead of producing heat, so the smoke leaves cool and loaded with unburned material. Damping a fire down overnight for a slow burn does the same thing deliberately. An exterior chimney on a cold wall, or a flue far larger than the appliance needs, cools the smoke before it reaches the top. Combine two of those and a single season can move a flue from flaky soot to glaze.
How to keep it at stage one
The short answer: dry wood, hot fires and annual attention. Burn wood seasoned at least six months to a year, split and stored off the ground under cover. Run the fire hot rather than smouldering it down. Do not close the air supply to make a fire last overnight. Frequently asked questions
How do I know which stage of creosote I have?
You generally cannot tell from the firebox, because the buildup that matters is further up the flue. An inspection with a light and, where warranted, a camera is what identifies the stage. A technician should be able to describe what they found and where.
Can creosote be removed with a chimney sweeping log?
Those products can help break down some deposits and make later sweeping more effective, but they do not remove anything. The material still has to come out of the flue mechanically. Treat them as a supplement to sweeping rather than a replacement for it.
Is glazed creosote always removable?
Not always. Chemical treatment followed by rotary work removes a great deal of it, but heavily glazed flues sometimes cannot be brought back to a safe condition. When that happens, installing a new liner is the appropriate answer rather than repeated attempts.
How much creosote is enough to be a fire risk?
A commonly used threshold is about an eighth of an inch of buildup warranting a sweep, with a quarter inch considered a significant hazard. Stage three glaze is treated as a risk at any measurable thickness because of how readily it ignites.
Does burning softwood like pine cause more creosote?
Softwoods burn faster and have more resin, but the dominant factor is moisture content, not species. Well-seasoned pine burned hot produces less creosote than oak that was split last month. Dry wood matters more than which tree it came from.
Can I burn a hot fire to burn off creosote?
No, and attempting it is how chimney fires start. Deliberately igniting deposits in a flue is uncontrolled by definition, and the temperatures involved can crack a liner or ignite framing. Removal is a mechanical job, not a burning one.
Do gas fireplaces produce creosote?
No, creosote is a product of burning wood. Gas appliances have their own maintenance needs around venting, sensors and combustion quality, but creosote buildup is not among them.
How can I tell if I have had a chimney fire without knowing it?
Common evidence includes puffy or honeycombed creosote, cracked or displaced flue tiles, warped damper components, discoloured roof material near the chimney, and creosote flakes on the roof or ground. Many chimney fires burn out on their own without the homeowner noticing, which is why these signs matter.
